Bedside decoration
We painted our new nightstands in our favorite gray paint, Benjamin Moore Pale Oak and it really upgraded them to such a beautiful, custom look.
Finally, after feeling like we’re all organized inside these cute bedside tables, we’re done decorating! You know I’m a minimalist, so I don’t like a lot of “things”… but I still like things that feel nice and functional.
With that in mind, here are a few of my best tips and tricks for decorating a nightstand! Learn how to style a nightstand in just a few easy steps.
What happens on the nightstand?
This is a completely personalized situation and a different one for everyone! The following items may (or may not) be suitable for your nightstand decor:
- Lamp
- Books on the coffee table (or whatever you’re reading right now, of course)
- A vase of The flowers or…
- A Houseplant (see my favorites houseplants you can’t kill)
- Picture frame
- Tray
- Bowl (for jewelry or small items)
- Box (consider wooden or metal for a functional storage element)
- Baskets
- Candle
- Diffuser
Decorate your bedside table in six steps
- First, pick a nice pair of lights! You can also use a set of sconce lights on either side of the bed, which frees up more space for the bedside table decoration.
- More books. Of course, this could mean the books you’re actually reading or you could pick from my favorites. book coffee table for more design impact.
- Next, choose something organic. In our home we love a vase or a beautiful green houseplant.
- Add fragrance. This could be your favorite relaxation candle, reed diffuser, or plug in an essential oil diffuser.
- Create texture. I like to use trays, baskets, ceramic or metal containers for contrast and texture. Plus, we can store items like remotes in it!
- Personalized. The simplest way to do this is to add a sweet family photo. This could be a current snap, a favorite holiday memory, or even a vintage family photo that brings you joy.
Give advice
- Out of all the items on this list, lights are the only one that is considered a “need” instead of a want. Let’s do what for you!
- Pick up the books on the pretty coffee table if you want, or of course, whatever you’re reading.
- Want a more dramatic look? Lean or hang artwork or mirrors on your bedside table. (Remember that this image works best when there’s no artwork on top of your bed!)
- Aim for the classic design triangle: items are arranged in different sizes in groups of three or odd numbers. Read more below!

Also known as the rule of thirds or the rule of three, a design triangle is a simple technique that can help you display objects in an eye-catching form. It just implies that items arranged in odd numbers are generally more aesthetically pleasing.

This simply means that an odd number of items (small, medium, and large scale) tend to look great in a group. This technique works great for headboard styling since it’s such a small countertop space. If you need more than three, choose five or seven. An odd number tends to be the key to success here!

Remember, rules are made to be broken. If perfect symmetry is more pleasing to your headboard decor, choose it!
