Jason Cunningham comes in fight this Saturday at Wembley Arena against the confident but knowing Zolani Tete against the former world champion.
Yorkshireman Cunningham, 32, has not lost a match since being knocked out by Michael Conlan four years ago. The seven fights since have produced seven wins as well as British, Commonwealth and European Super Bantamweight titles at the same time. But go from beat the superior Terry Le Couviour Last visit to Tete was a significant leap in quality.
“I need to work at this level, I can’t accept any slips or slights against Tete,” ‘Iceman’ said in a Queensbury Promotion press release.
Tete won world titles in super fly and bantamweight and is remembered by British fighting fans for stopping Paul Butler in eight rounds seven years ago in his first championship defense. The South African is now 34 and has only fought twice in two and a half years but Cunningham is focusing on the threat he poses rather than his inactivity.
“I know he’s been inactive for the last couple of years but, he’s still there and has done it at a variety of weights. I’ve definitely endured this fight, and I just think the timing is right.
“Really now, if I want to be world champion; I need to beat Tete, simple as that. “
