BlendIf works by overlaying one layer on top of another based on the grayscale luminosity or luminosity of one of the three color channels. This allows you to quickly and accurately do things like add a little impact to a sunset or the like. Just remember that Photoshop not only allows for threshold control, but also adds feathers, making it easy to build in an imperceptible transition to make the effect more natural.
