Highway accident kills 6 youths ejected from car in Tennessee : NPR


PLEASANT VIEW, Tenn. – A car crash has killed six young people, including a 1-year-old infant, after they were ejected from their vehicle early Sunday morning on a freeway in central Tennessee, authorities said. . Two adults were injured, one of them critically.

Brent Dyer, director of the county’s emergency management services office, said emergency crews found an overturned car with extensive damage when they arrived at the crash site around 2 a.m.

Dyer said in a press release that first responders found six women between the ages of 1 and 18 who had been thrown from the vehicle and could not be resuscitated.

Officials said a woman was hospitalized in critical condition after apparently being pushed out of a vehicle. One man suffered minor injuries, officials said,

Officials said a second vehicle whose driver was not injured was found near the damaged vehicle. Those killed and injured were not immediately identified. It was not immediately clear if they were related.

The crash happened on I-24 near Pleasant View and Springfield, and a section of the freeway was closed for hours before reopening the following Sunday. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

The county office of emergency management is coordinating professional mental health and counseling services for crash response teams.

“Our office recognized the incredible difficulty of this scene,” said Dyer’s press release.
