Here are eight all-electric Top Safety Picks for 2022
Eight electric cars are among 65 models recognized with the Insurance Institute’s highest Top Safety Pick+ award for 2022.
Released on Thursday, the list includes Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Rechargeable Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge, Volkswagen ID.4, and Audi E-Tron and the E-Tron Sportback. Note that the C40 Recharge and E-Tron Sportback are “coupe” versions of the XC40 Recharge and E-Tron respectively.
To receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating, a vehicle must score the highest “Good” in all six IIHS crash test categories, with an “Advanced” or “Advanced” rating for crash prevention technology. Front is available in both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and headlights with a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating are standard equipment.
The Hyundai Nexo The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle was also named a Top Safety Pick+, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E received a level two Top Safety Pick award. The Mach-E missed out on the added “plus” because the headlights on Select and California Route 1 trim levels received a lower “Margin” rating.
Next year will likely issue the first safety ratings for all-electric pickups as the first models begin ramping up production. The Rivian R1T and GMC Hummer EV have begun limited production, with the Ford F-150 Lightning expected to launch in the coming months. A more difficult side impact test is also expected.
