GMSV: Trademark filing points for local launch for full-size SUV

Having hinted at the introduction of an electric Cadillac in Australia last week, General Motors appears to be busy laying the groundwork for a full-size SUV powered by an internal combustion engine.

ONE trademark filing on the Australian IP database indicates a potential referral for GMC Yukon.

The profile was published on March 17, 2023 and is currently pending indexing.

The Yukon and Yukon XL are the GMC brand’s counterweight to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, respectively, and all of these SUVs – plus the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV – are underpinned by GM’s body-on-frame T1 platform.

This is the same platform used by GM’s full-size pickup trucks, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

While the manufacturers were already known by the brand names in Australia without bringing them to market, the application for Yukon followed a Cadillac lyriqwhich was then tracked in right-hand drive cover.

We have reached out to GMSV for comment on the application.

The Yukon is not currently produced with right-hand drive, which suggests that if GMSV introduced it, the company would import it with left-hand drive and re-produce it locally as it did for the Chevrolet Silverado pickup. 1500 and HD .

There is no separate profile for the Yukon XL, a stretched version of the Yukon.

The Yukon measures 5334mm long, 2057mm wide excluding mirrors and 1943mm tall on a 3071mm wheelbase, while the Yukon XL is 5720mm long on a 3406mm wheelbase.

For context, a Toyota LandCruiser 300 up to 5015mm long and 1990mm wide on a 2850mm wheelbase.

Even the regular-length Yukon seats up to nine people across three rows of seats.

It can be chosen with rear- or all-wheel drive, and five trim levels include the terrain-oriented AT4 and the flashy Denali Ultimate.

Three powertrains are available: naturally aspirated 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 petrol engines, along with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, all mated to an automatic transmission. 10 levels.

The 5.3-liter engine produces 265kW and 519Nm, while the 6.2-liter engine produces 313kW and 624Nm; the latter engine is currently the only engine in the native Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine produces 206kW and 624Nm exactly like the most powerful V8.

The base SLE offers a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrated and Google’s wireless, digital instrument cluster, LED headlights, automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist.

A front bench is optional, providing seating for up to nine people.

The mid-range SLT features standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, heated and ventilated front seats, leather trim and a power-adjustable rear trunk, while the AT4 only gets 4WD. hill control assist, adaptive dampers, unique front fender to improve approach angle, front tow hook and skid plate.

The Denali, formerly a top-spec model, is equipped with a 14-speaker Bose sound system, surround-view camera, 15-inch head-up display and Magnetic Cruise Control. properties of GM.

The flagship Denali Ultimate builds on Denali with features like 22-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, power retractable side sills, digital rearview mirror , rear seat entertainment package with dual 12.6-inch displays, front seat massagers, upgraded interior trim and air suspension on RWD models.

A pair of trailer packs are available across the range.

GM has competed in this field before in Australia, offering a right-hand drive version of the Chevrolet Suburban called the Holden Suburban from 1998 to 2001.

Failing that, Holden delivered only 746 dwarf LandCruisers, powered by gasoline and V8 diesel engines.

If Yukon and Lyriq come here, they will help diversify GMSV’s local lineup beyond Chevrolets. All that’s missing will be a representative from GM’s fourth North American brand, Buick.

For decades, GMC didn’t do much but rebrand Chevrolet products, with their cars sold through separate dealer networks. This relationship is similar to that between Ford and its Mercury division, or Dodge and Plymouth at Chrysler.

But since the 2000s, GM has put more effort into distinguishing GMCs from Chevrolets, often giving them unique interior designs and metal panels.

The brand has also expanded beyond pickup trucks and body-on-frame SUVs, into monolithic crossovers like the Acadia, formerly sold here as the Holden Acadia.
