Glen Ellen Vocal Academy awarded grants

Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Inc. (GEVA) is the oldest thoroughbred rescue and rehabilitation facility in Northern California, and it’s also been a retirement sanctuary accredited since 2011 by the Global Federation for the Conservation of Animals (GFAS). GEVA has once again been honored with a grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation’s Brennan Equine Welfare Fund (BEWF). In doing so, BEWF also highlighted GEVA in its press release, which is most appreciated. Visit its website at https://www.brennanequinewosystemfund.com to learn more about the purpose and history of the BEWF.

GEVA is also the recipient of a grant from the Purebred Charity of America (TCA, https://www.thoroughbred aftercare.org/), has expanded its involvement in purebred breeds (OTTB) and aftercare. Both grants go to help maintain GEVA’s horses. GEVA is grateful and proud to have been a TCA grant recipient for nearly 20 years.

Former racing manager Pam Berg founded GEVA in 1995 and developed it on her Glen Ellen ranch. In 2013, GEVA was awarded accreditation by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), which has continued since then.

At this time, all of the horses retired at the GEVA ranch are former Thoroughbred racehorses retired from the track. However, GEVA is also home to horses of other breeds. GEVA residents include horses bred by top stallions such as Tapit as well as by less noticeable breeding males. Regardless of their breeding record or on the rise, they all deserve a comfortable retirement.

In recognition of her work with GEVA, Berg received the Dogwood Stable’s Dominion Award in 2004. The award honors those in the racing industry who have worked to make a positive impact in the business. Berg was also honored by the Sonoma Horse Board in 2011 when inducted into the Hall of Fame for her work providing the needed horses.

In addition to its role as a rescue operation, GEVA was established as a bilingual vocational school to teach people the skills they need to work safely, humanely and confidently with horses. Unfortunately, the school never received the funding it needed to go live.
