Ford and Volvo will participate battery recycling starts Redwood Materials in developing processes, starting in California, for collecting end-of-life materials the battery magnetism and hybrid car and recalling materials for use in new batteries, the companies said on Thursday.
Redwood Materials, co-founded by former Tesla chief executive officer JB Straubel, formed a previous partnership last fall with Ford to develop a “closed loop” or circular supply chain for tram (EV) batteries, from raw materials to recycling.
On Thursday, Redwood Materials said it will work directly with authorized dealer and California dismantlers to identify and restore end-of-life battery packs. The materials in those packages will be recovered and recycled at Redwood Materials’ facilities in northern Nevada.
US automakers Ford and General Motors Co (GM) said battery recycling efforts are crucial in efforts to develop a domestic supply chain to meet growing demand for electric vehicles.
GM and battery partner LG Energy Solution last year announced a partnership with startup Li-Cycle to recycle scrap batteries from Ultium Cells, the GM-LG joint venture that is building battery plants in Ohio, Tennessee, and Ohio. Michigan.
Redwood Materials has a similar partnership with battery maker Panasonic in Nevada and Visualization AESC in Tennessee, as well as with Amazon. Ford and Amazon are among the investors in Redwood Materials.
