Flameaway Filly topped the males in the Keeneland debut
This column highlights the performances of damsels who have started no more than five times and sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, with graded siblings/group winners or dams classified/group winner. BloodHorse’s research shows that early winners, in particular, those who meet these criteria are more likely to become graded stakes winners.
Keeneland
In a week filled with impressive graduates, John Oxley’s children In your dream became the first 2-year-old filly to make her name among the Maiden Watchers after an impressive debut against the boys on April 21 at Keeneland.
An ivory filly already two shades lighter than her Grade 1 winner Dream Dancing is at this stage in her career, Dreamaway is placed as a 1-2 favorite despite being the only most will post against seven men. She enters the 4 1/2-length maiden special weight class, prepared in the style that only trainer Wesley Ward seems to do best as the 2-year-old season approaches. Kentucky-based Conditioner has won five of seven races over the two-year span of the Keeneland spring meet.
She has thrown down six three-furlong shad works: 37 since coming into Ward’s care, including four furlongs on the surface of the famous deep Payson Park Training Center in South Florida.
Dreamaway showed nothing but determination in his debut, winning a straight fight that lasted four and a half rounds with the Steve Asmussen-trained Smart again . With Hall of Famer John Velasquez on board, Dreamaway remains one step ahead of the $500,000 colt, unwavering on the tracks. Clever Again came close to victory on the line after hunting the filly all the time. Crossing the finish line almost in unison, Dreamaway narrowly won in :53.41 on the fast main track.
Daughter of the stallion Oxley fire , a promising second-crop sire with 21 winners from last year’s first runners, Dreamaway became the second winner produced by Dream Dancing. Also motivated by Oxley, Dream Dancing’s most beautiful moment came when the 3-year-old girl gathered six people deep underground. Del Mar immediately won the 2017 Del Mar Oaks (G1T).
While Dream Dancing raced mainly on turf, Flameaway found success on both surfaces. The tough son of Scat Daddy began his career with wins on turf but eventually found his way to the turf for trainer Mark Casse, even starting in the 2018 Kentucky Derby (G1).
Flameaway’s debut 2yo #2 DREAMAWAY ($3.04) just edged Clever Again #4 to win race 2 at Keeneland. John Velazquez joined Wesley Ward, winner of yet another 2yo race.
