Hyundai’s window tinting technology can save more energy in hot summers

Hyundai has developed a window shade that the automaker claims can help keep interiors cooler and therefore save on energy normally used for air conditioning.

Unlike materials that simply darken windows and reduce visibility to the outside, Hyundai claims in a press release that Nano Cooling Film reduces interior temperatures by blocking external heat and radiating heat inside. inside and outside the car.

The dye film consists of three layers. According to Hyundai, an outer layer radiates heat at mid-infrared wavelengths, while two inner layers reflect incoming heat at near-infrared wavelengths.

The Nano Cooling Film was first shown in 2023 but Hyundai recently put it to the test on 70 customer vehicles in Lahore, Pakistan. Hyundai said it chose Lahore because applying heat-insulating film to vehicle windows is prohibited by local regulations. And with summer temperatures exceeding 122 degrees Fahrenheit, this is the perfect place to test interior cooling technology.

Hyundai claims the temperature inside the test vehicle has decreased significantly but still complies with regulations. Hyundai’s own lab tests showed that temperatures near the driver’s head were reduced by 19.8 degrees Fahrenheit compared to conventional tinting and by 22.2 degrees compared to the same car without tinted windows.

Hyundai did not discuss commercialization plans, but noted that Nano Cooling Film could be applied in parallel with conventional tinted films if regulations allow. So it may be useful in hotter regions of the United States

In addition to high-tech dyeing, many efforts have also been made Combines tinted windows and solar panels. In spite of Spray solar cells Touted years ago but a possibility that has yet to materialize, some hybrid and electric vehicles now have roofs that partially block the sun and generate some power.

Essentially, electric vehicles don’t sacrifice as much cabin cooling efficiency in hotter weather than in the past heating the cabin an equivalent amount. And it involves physics, and Heat pumps can help by warming the car cabin by moving heat instead of creating it.
