How Todd Hido creates his landscape photos

I was recently introduced to photographer Todd Hido on Jason Momoa’s film archives on HBO. Momoa has real feelings for Todd. I wish I had a fan like that; If you watch the show, you’ll understand what I mean.

In this video, you’ll see Hido talk about what went into the making of his latest picture book, “The End Sends Advance Warning”. Hido’s work is filmed at night and often when it is rainy and foggy, creating a moody and gloomy look. The houses are reminiscent of his Ohio hometown, and being from Michigan, I can relate to all of his work. Hido said these images took him back to his childhood. But they were shot in Northern California; He found an area near his home where developers built homes similar to the Midwestern style.

Hido says he’s an artist, not a documentary filmmaker, and he offers to print your photos. We’re so stuck with digital photos and viewing them on a screen, but when you create a physical copy of the image, everything changes.

Hido also says that creating photo books is the best way to get your work out into the world. Having a physical photography book in your home is a great way to immerse yourself in the physical form of photography instead of searching the internet. I agree; I have many coffee table photography books and I look through them often. They can spark a new idea and be a great source of inspiration.
