The Live Thoroughbred season will kick off from the gate at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack on April 24, marking the 62nd consecutive racing season at the New York West Circuit. The 90-day scheduled meetup will begin with an eight-race Opening Day card starting at 1:15 p.m. ET.
The Saturday race is the feature event of the Opening Day card. The allowance test has attracted a group of classy older men and will be run at a distance of four and a half. Dr. Blarney was the 8-5 earliest favorite and has a resume that includes a total of 26 career wins. Student Karl Grusmark will be under the guidance of jockey Jacqueline Davis.
Lady’s golden boy beat the favorites in the morning when they last met in November. Intern Debra Breed completed a three-match winning streak to close out the 2022 meet. The successful winning streak includes one win. important role in the Leon Reed Memorial Stakes on October 10. He will be under the direction of Nazario Alvarado.
Last year’s top performers will be honored after the fourth race on Opening Day. Jockey Andre Worrie ended the 2022 meeting with 98 wins to claim his first FLGR equestrian title. He will try to start again where he stopped on Monday, as he is assigned to five races. Meanwhile, veteran coach Chris Englehart will be recognized for his 20th coaching title after riding 62 winners in 2022.
The 2023 meeting will have 14 stakes, the focus being the $150,000 New York Derby on Monday, July 24 for mixed-race 3-year-olds in New York. The richest stake of the year is $200,000 (estimated) New York Breeders Futures for New York Breeding 2-year-olds October 16.
Coach James Aquilano is close to hitting 2,000 career wins in 2023. With 1,964 victories recorded since his first year in charge in 1981, he is 36 points away. Before starting his own coaching career, Aquilano served as an assistant to Finger Lakes conditioning legend Michael S. Ferraro.
FLGR will introduce the $1 minimum Pick-6 to replace the Jackpot Pick-6 in the betting menu this season. Multi-race bets will start on the third race on each card. If no one picks all six winners, 75% of the total will be carried over to the next live race day, while 25% is paid to those who pick the most winners in the specified races. .
The live race shows will be free for all fans to attend on both Opening Day as well as Tuesday.
FLGR will offer live Thoroughbred action every Monday and Tuesday for the first three weeks of the season. Wednesday will be added as race day on May 17. The first race posting time has been moved to 1:15 p.m. ET for this season.
