It was an early Wednesday morning, and my husband was on his way to the grocery store to get some groceries before the crowds arrived. He had walked about a mile from our house down a deserted road surrounded by farmland. At first, from afar, he thought he saw a bag of trash someone threw out the window of their car; As he got closer, he could see something moving and realized it was a puppy lying on the road.
When he approached the poor puppy, he thought it was dead until its little tail started wagging. He picked her up, put her in the car and drove directly back home. I work from home and get a call from my husband before he pulls into the driveway; he mentioned that he had a little surprise for me. I stepped out onto the passenger side of the car, he looked down at the floorboards, which of course made me look down as well, and there she was: a scared, wet and cuddly puppy, about 6 weeks old- old.
We have three other dogs and lots of different sized kennels, so I broke a kennel, bought some puppy food and gave him some water. She slept peacefully for several hours. We debated whether it was possible to keep her and decided that three dogs was too much to handle. My husband is on his way to Pinal County Animal Care and Control for her to be adopted by a loving family.
Well, needless to say, I couldn’t stop thinking about her, calling my husband and telling him I wanted to keep the puppy. Who knew we were the loving family she needed? It was too late, she was in the system, and now we have to adopt her. The shelter manager was awesome and told my husband that the shelter would take care of all her injections and microchips for free, PLUS halving the adoption fee. That’s a no-brainer. She is on her way back to her permanent home and she is thriving.
Lucky, along with our other rescue dogs, is more than just family. I can’t imagine my life without these stupid, amazing dogs.
