Equine Herpesvirus Case in Laurel; Barn 33 Isolation

On April 14, 2024, the Maryland Jockey Club was alerted to a horse exhibiting neurological abnormalities in its hind limbs. At that time, the horse did not display a fever and has remained fever-free since. As a precaution, both this horse and another horse that was near the affected animal but did not show symptoms were moved to a quarantine pen in Laurel Park. Additionally, Stable 33, where the affected horse was housed, was quickly quarantined.

We promptly notified the State Veterinary Office and arranged for the affected horse to be tested for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV). Late yesterday we received confirmation that the initial nasal swab tested positive for EHV. The next test is scheduled for later this week.

In coordination with the State Veterinary Office, we are in the process of developing a comprehensive quarantine protocol for Stable 33. This plan will allow horses in this pen to be trained separately from the general herd and for allowing other stables to continue their regular training and racing activities. .

It is imperative that all horses housed there are closely monitored for any signs of fever or symptoms consistent with EHV. Any horse with a temperature above 101.5 degrees F or showing signs of loss of coordination should be reported immediately to the MJC Veterinarian.
