An issue that matters more to top economists than any other in this election: climate change

Three-quarters of the top 50 economists surveyed by The Conversation and Australian Economic Association nominated “climate and environment” as the most important issue for the incoming government and the most important issue in the election.
The 74% of climate and environment nominations is more than double the rate of nominations for four significant candidates: housing availability and affordability, health care, tax reform and education.

None of the 50 surveyed nominated “lower taxes” as important to the upcoming election or government, and only 8% nominated business support.
The economists selected for the survey are recognized as leaders in areas including economic modeling and public policy. Among them are former IMF, Treasury and OECD officials, and a former Reserve Bank Board member.
Many people note that their priorities are the opposite of the priorities of both major parties.
