Scuderia Ferrari, the undisputed kings of commodities in the Formula 1 paddock, has partnered with RayBan sunglasses and Meta by Mark Zuck to offer a limited edition pair of branded “Meta Wayfarer Scuderia Ferrari Miami LTD” smart sunglasses. The regular black smart glasses have been available for a few years now, and you can buy a pair for $299, but there’s a Ferrari logo and a new blue color to celebrate. Scuderia blue for the Miami Grand Prix, only 1,000 will be sold for $499 each. Ferrari tax, my friend.

Ever since these crappy glasses hit the market, I’ve had a hard time finding a single use case for them, but this collaboration with Fezza has made me rethink that notion. The only useful use for these glasses is to help racers use them to live stream races from inside their own helmets. Streaming Formula 1 is the only way I’m going to get back to using my Facebook account for anything except feeding my Instagram feed to my grandmother.

Seeing the entire race from the driver’s perspective would be amazing. F1 currently has a number of “Driver Eye” cameras, but the series uses them infrequently and only takes short bursts. I wanted to watch Charles struggle to pass his soon-to-be unemployed teammate from inside the helmet, using the built-in “ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera,” and hear the frustration in his voice over Google’s smart glasses The Meta Wayfarer’s built-in mic in the pit responded to his question with “Checking.” I mean how cool would it have been to be inside Carlos’s head last season when he first said “Stop inventing!”?

Yes, F1 is probably best seen from the driver’s eye view. This is a good idea and should be implemented immediately.
