Publisher D3 announced that it sold over 1 million units Earth Defense Force 5 all around the world. This figure combines the number of units sold on both PlayStation 4 and PC. The company also adds that more than 500,000 units have been sold in Japan. This means that the rest of the world contributed the other half to the entire tally.
EDF 5 first launched for PlayStation 4 in Japan in December 2017 and it achieved 300,000 units went on sale in January 2018. The global release came digitally one year after the Japanese version’s release, during December 2018. D3 Publisher worked with PQube to release physical version of the game in October 2020. The company also brought the game to PC via Steam in July 2019. In total, it took over 4 and a half years for the game to reach this milestone.
Announcement of the million revenue milestone for EDF 5 appeared just as Publisher D3 was preparing a sequel to the game. The company will issue Earth Defense Force 6 for PlayStation 5 and 4 in Japan on August 25, 2022. The fifth main entry describes a major alien invasion of Earth and how the force of the same name mobilizes for the fight to protect. The upcoming sequel will take place three years after those events.
