Dog escapes pet hotel and travels 2 miles to ring his own doorbell
Choosing a safe place for your dog to stay while you’re on vacation is important. However, even the safest facilities can’t keep some staunch dogs. Shortly after Jeremy and Sarah Henson left their dog, Dexter, at a pet hotel in Kansas in February, the puppy began planning an escape.
After Jeremy and Sarah leave their home, they receive a notification from their Ring doorbell. They were shocked to find that somehow, their dog was outside their home, even though they released it not long ago. Luckily, the final situation is more funny than scary because Dexter is safe now!
Dexter himself checked the hotel
The couple took Dexter to a popular pet hotel in Lenexa, Kansas, before hiking in Mount Zion National Park. From there, they travel to Las Vegas and are ready to explore. But a notification from their Ring camera interrupted them.
When they checked to see what motion the camera was detecting, they spotted a dog sitting outside their front door. At first they assumed it was another dog, but upon observing the dog, they knew it must be Dexter.
“I activated the Ring doorbell to calm Dexter. He looked very excited and didn’t look panicked,” said Jeremy Henson.
Jeremy talked to Dexter on camera, and the puppy eagerly listened to his voice. While Dexter waited patiently, Jeremy called several family members, and Sarah contacted the pet hotel. A blizzard was coming, so they wanted to make sure their dog was safe before continuing on the trip.
A “Homeward Bound” Adventure
The dog hotel is about 2 miles from the Hensons’ home. Dexter extended the 6-foot fence and the 4-foot fence at the hotel and ran straight home from there. When he got home, he assumed his self was still inside. He didn’t know they were in a different state.
Within ten minutes of the couple’s call, someone from the pet hotel had arrived to pick up Dexter, who was still sitting patiently in front of the camera. He hopped into the dog sitter’s car without hesitation, and he stayed at the hotel the rest of the time.

“We’ve always known he’s smart, it really makes sense when he does that,” Jeremy said. “He got himself into trouble with how smart he was.”
When Jeremy and Sarah returned from their trip, Dexter was ecstatic. As soon as he saw his humans, he caressed them affectionately. Jeremy believes Dexter knows how to get home because they’ve taken him around so many places, including a couple of times past the hotel.
