The role of AI is being discussed more than ever in creative fields, even places where we previously thought it had no applications. Among the various thoughts and emotions that arise when discussing AI in the creative field is one that treats it as a tool – one of many that an artist can call upon. Today, we’re watching a video that approaches a graphical AI engine, Midjourney, with that mindset.
Midjourney is unlike most other AI tools that photographers use and accept as part of their workflow; it doesn’t use AI to reduce noise, replace the sky, or make skin retouching easier. It’s a bit more basic in terms of shaping. It creates complete images with just a text prompt and allows anyone, no matter where they are, to create amazing images by simply typing a text prompt into a chat app. .

He starts by explaining how to set up your Midjourney account and then moves on to teach you how to create an otherworldly image using text prompts. He goes on to explain how Midjourney works through Discord, and how the previews are refined into high-resolution output images. His example image demonstrates how Midjourney can be used for realistic photographic work other than creating artistic scenes such as ethereal landscapes or imaginative anthropomorphic creatures.
Midjourney understands many photographic terms, such as those used to describe light, lens, aperture, field of view, etc.; so your skill at producing a predictable outcome will be determined by how well you can describe it to the AI. Imagine explaining the scene to a person with vision loss.
Alex explains why it’s important to him, as a commercial photographer, that his explorations are private. He explains why he decided to pay to keep his creations private. However, he promises to explore Midjourney further using a photographer’s skills and perspective, in upcoming videos.
