Every time Honda released a modern version of one of their iconic pint-sized motorcycles, K-Speed Scramble. Thai parts factories and workshops love small bikes and regularly set the Internet on fire with Honda Super Cube and Monkey customs. Now, they’ve worked wonders on the new Honda Dax — and predictably, it’s another hit.
That’s right, the beloved Honda Dax is back (though it’s yet to be released in the US, where it was originally called the CT70). Its official name is Honda ST125 Dax, because it is powered by the same 124 cc air-cooled engine as the modern Honda Cub. It blends Dax’s classic T-shaped pressed steel with a few modern touches and it’s as cute as a button.
K-Speed’s founder, Eak, has a special love for Dax; he owned the 50 cc version of it when he was 13 years old. Driven by nostalgia, he set out to give the new Dax a major dose of K-Speed’s signature style — and in the process, he created what could be a style Dax 2022 custom first.
Dubbed ‘Daxster’, this murdered mini-rival It is also a testing ground for prototyping new parts, for K-Speed’s in-house ‘Diablo’ brand. So while it has some disposable mods, it’s also chock full of parts that Dax owners will be able to equip their bikes with.
We’re not just talking about turn signals and handles. One of the most important plug-and-play mods on this Honda is the muscular upside-down front end. The setup includes specially designed fork and spokes and sits 3 inches lower than stock (with the option to lower an additional inch).
The fork foot is also wider, allowing the use of super tough rubber. The Honda Dax 12” wheels are now fitted with IRC ‘Tractor-Grip’ tires, measuring 130/80-12 at both ends. Diablo wheel covers, made from ABS plastic, add to the aesthetic of the wheel.
K-Speed installs a pair of Diablo shock absorbers that are lowered to the rear, then widen and flex the swingarm. Dax’s OEM rear fenders and grips are gone, replaced by a custom-built luggage rack that surrounds the Diablo taillights. As for the frame itself, that’s still in stock.
The team has also done some clever cleanup around here. The passenger pins are gone, but their brackets have been cut back rather than crated, as they protect and support many other bits. Sitting to the left is a neat license plate holder, bolted to the shock mount bracket below.
Upstairs is a new seat and right in front is a second luggage rack. Lying along the frame is Honda’s OEM speedo, mounted on a new frame.
But it’s the custom steering and new gearshift paddles that really caught our attention. The handlebars are actually two separate sections, held by forks that have rotated 90 degrees, with a sturdy top clamp for added sturdiness. This setup allows the user to rotate individual bars, to make them narrower or wider.
The rest of the cockpit has typical K-Speed fare. Dax single brake levers come with Diablo grips, vintage-style micro switches, and LED bar turn signals. The two silver dials at the bottom of the bars are for show only — an homage to those on the original Dax.
LED headlights are located up front, with small Diablo turn signals on duty at both ends. New pins complete the list.
K-Speed has also treated the Dax with a custom exhaust system. It mimics the original by following the same route—but it looks like it will burst an eardrum. It comes complete with a drilled heat shield and a neat little hook to attach it to the original muffler’s attachment point.
As we’ve come to expect from the richest custom shop in Thailand, this Dax is finished in all black – right down to the Honda logos painted black on the sides of the frame. A custom ‘Daxster’ graphic mimics the original Dax logo, while the brown upholstery adds some contrast.
