Days to add to your calendar to be money-smart in 2023
Good money management is more than just tracking your income and spending. Many financial tasks come with deadlines or due dates that you don’t want to miss.
In addition to knowing when your monthly bills are due (or even better, automate your payments so you don’t miss a thing), add these important payment deadlines into your 2023 calendar to use your money smarter all year long.
January 15
- Open enrollment for the Health Insurance Marketplace plans for 2023 ends. If you’re looking to sign up for a health plan through the Affordable Care Act’s Marketplace, this is the last day to get coverage for the year.
January 17
- Filing due for individuals making estimated tax payments. If you own a business, are self-employed, or earn another income that doesn’t require you to withhold taxes, you may need to make estimated tax payments throughout the year. For earnings from September to December 2022, estimated tax payments due January 17, 2023.
February 15
- Personal withholding exemption due. Exempt from withholding tax? You will need to recertify this every year with a new certification Model W-4 before February 15.
April 18
- Personal tax returns and payments due. Tax return due April 18 in 2023 because the usual tax date — April 15 — falls on a Saturday, and Washington, DC, celebrates Emancipation Day on April 17.
- Pay for any unpaid 2022 income taxes due. Individuals can apply for an extension (also due before Tax Day) to move their paperwork due back to October 16, but payments are still due in April.
- Estimated tax payments for the first quarter are due.
- Last day to contribute to IRAs and HSAs in 2022. If you’re looking to reduce your taxable income at the last minute, this is the last day to contribute to personal retirement accounts and health savings accounts in 2022.
June 15
- Taxes levied by US residents living abroad. US citizens living outside of the states and Puerto Rico have until June to file and pay their taxes. These taxpayers can also apply for an extension to move the deadline to October 16.
- Estimated tax payments for the second quarter are due.
June 30
- FAFSA submission deadline. If you or your dependents will be attending college during the 2023-24 academic year and need to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, you have until June 30 to apply.
September 15
- Estimated third-quarter tax payments are due.
October 1st
- FAFSA 2024-25 is open. If you or your dependents plan to attend college for the 2024-2025 school year, you can apply for federal student aid starting October 1.
- The CSS profile opens. Colleges and scholarship programs use a second financial aid application, the CSS profile, to determine eligibility for non-federal aid and grants. Note that schools set their own deadlines for when to apply for this, so you should steer clear of it.
October 15
- Medicare open enrollment begins. People 65 years of age or older or people with certain disabilities are eligible for the federal health insurance program. Open enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7 for coverage for the following year.
October 16
- The deadline for taxpayers who have filed an application is extended. The deadline for filing income tax returns for 2022 is October 16 for anyone with a six-month extension.
November 1
- Open enrollment for Health Insurance Marketplace plans begins in 2024. Individuals who receive health insurance through the ACA have until January to apply for coverage in 2024.
December 7
- Enrollment opens Medicare closed. Coverage begins January 1 for individuals who sign up before December 7 of the previous year.
