Chery Omoda 5 EV: Electric SUV to debut at Auto Shanghai 2023, debut in Malaysia at the end of the year
The Chery Omoda 5 EV is taking center stage at the automaker’s Auto Shanghai 2023 booth. The electric version of the Omoda 5 SUV appears to be in final production form, although specifics are lacking. However, we can reveal that the Omoda 5 EV is coming to Malaysia, likely to be introduced towards the end of 2023.
This is according to Chery Malaysia officials we spoke to at the Shanghai auto show, who added that the electric SUV will enter our market as a CBU import from China, taking advantage of take advantage of Malaysia’s tax-free incentives for imported electric vehicles. This is in contrast to the domestic assembly roadmap for internal combustion engines Omoda 5, coming soon in CKD form.
Official details on the Omoda 5 EV are scarce, but as of July 2022, Chery Malaysia has released an online survey form for Omoda 5 EV, mentioning details such as 150 kW (204 PS) and 400 Nm of power, a 64 kWh battery, and a WLTP range of 450 km. Also mentioned is fast DC charging from 0-80% SOC in 40 minutes and AC charging in five hours.
Compared to the ICE Omoda 5, the Omoda 5 EV has a very different look, one suitable for a battery-powered car. The bold and intricately patterned grille is gone, replaced by a more conventional, cleaner nose that doesn’t require cooling. Omoda, a sub-brand of Chery in China, is prominently spelled out on the nose. There are also two-tone aerodynamic wheels.
Inside, the car shown in Shanghai has a very interesting color scheme with the main color being blue, contrasting with the yellow stitching and light wood paneling – very refreshing. The steering boss still reads Chery, and the screens associated with the modern dashboard and angled phone slots remain. The gear lever of the ICE vehicle has been removed.
