Canon has announced a new RF mount ultra-wide zoom lens for budget-conscious photographers — the RF 15–30mm f / 4.5–6.3 IS STM. $550 lens complements existing lenses RF 14–35mm f/4L IS USM ($1,650) and RF 15–35mm f / 2.8L IS USM ($2,400)—those are all professional L-series lenses. Compared to its more expensive brethren, this new lens is impressively light, weighing just 0.9lbs (390g).
The new lens uses a seven-blade aperture diaphragm and is built using 13 elements in 11 groups, including two extra-low dispersion elements and one aspherical element. It has a minimum focus distance of 11in (28cm) throughout the entire focal range when using AF; Interestingly, when using manual focus at 15mm, it focuses as close as 5.1in (13cm). The lens features optical image stabilization and has a 67mm front filter. The barrel slightly expands when zoomed out.
