It is difficult for a dog to shelter in a crowded shelter. They usually only have a few seconds, from behind the crib door no more, to make an impression on potential adopters.
Speck, a Collie mix, didn’t give up hope as he waited months and months in Bullock County Humanitarian Association in Alabama for someone to adopt him. He reached out to everyone and anyone who passed by, literally.
Hold out a hopeful foot
Reaching through the crevices in the crib door to connect with people is a regular habit for Speck. He really just wanted someone to hold his hand.
Desiray Miracle-Wilder, sThe CEO at BCHS, told The Dodo:
“All he wants is everyone’s love. He’ll reach out his little hand and he just wants you touch him and hold his hand. And he gets upset when you leave to finish cleaning or whatever you have to do. “

Unfortunately, most shelter dog viewers don’t get the chance to have full contact with the dog, only watching them through a door the first time they visit. Obviously, a sensitive-looking dog like Speck has the ability to make someone fall in love in an instant.
“He just wants you to touch him. If you sit down, he’ll lie on top of you, if you hold his hand, he’ll hold your hand, if you scratch his stomach, he’ll roll over,” Wilder added.

An effective approach to spotting
In the end, the paws-on method really worked for Speck. It took some time, but reaching out to love made this worthy dog a family forever.
More viewers saw Speck’s love of holding hands when Wilder shared a video of the dog on Facebook. The sight of Speck’s bright eyes, tail wagging and gripping legs melted the hearts of netizens.
In April 2020, a year and a half since Speck first arrived at the shelter, the Bullock County Humane Society posted an update Facebook revealed that Speck was passed.
“Speck has completed his freelance trip to upstate NY to meet his parents Mike and Danielle! Now he has parents who will keep his hairy little feet and give him lots of love. Our hearts couldn’t be more full than right now. Specks’ video and journey not only ended with him finding a FurEver home, but 8 other FurBabies found a home thanks to him.”
Now he has fewer hands to hold every day, but Speck likes it well that way. He’s happy to embrace his self in the comfort of his new home.
