It was a whirlwind 24 hours in Rafah. Israeli tanks have taken control of the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing into Egypt. Ceasefire negotiations with Hamas are on the rocks after the militant group said yesterday it had accepted a proposal to mediate between Egypt and Qatar. However, Israel said the agreement did not meet its demands.

  • “In the end, the bottom line is and continues to be that thing Hamas wants an agreement to end the warand Israel says that would keep Hamas intact,” NPR’s Aya Batrawy reports Up first. A US official told NPR that Israel’s military activity on the border in Rafah did not appear to be the major attack the US had warned about. But aid organizations told Batrawy it was a “nightmare scenario:” The gateway for people to leave Gaza or for aid to flow in is now closed.

Ryan Riccucci worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection for 17 years. The agency is at the center of the immigration debate. Migrant advocates have accused U.S. Border Patrol agents of disrespecting and abusing people they encounter along the border. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Border Patrol Tucson Sector, accusing agents of detaining migrants in “inhumane and unconstitutional conditions.” But Riccuci said the public generally understands wrong role of your agency.”
