Calif’s longtime manager. Meyers dies at age 69


William Meyers, a manager in California for nearly 40 years, passed away on June 10 at the age of 69.

Jockeys and colleagues at Golden Gate Fields honor the man commonly known as “Will” on June 11 by gathering for a photo.

Meyers comes from a racing family. His father was a racing manager and secretary.

“Naturally, I started working with the horses myself,” he once said. “When I was a boy, we lived in Arcadia, then Coronado, and on weekends I would go down to Caliente to groom and take care of the horses. After that, I worked as an assistant manager in Stockton, Sacramento. and Ferndale.”

Meyers rose through the ranks of racing officials and became a manager in 1984. He was part of a manager rotation in California until February before heart surgery. He has served at many major racetracks and fairs.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, three children and two grandchildren.
