Bose Noise Canceling Headphones 700 Review: Why I’ll Never Fly Without Them

I am a convert to Apple AirPods. I used to have a pair of Beats hooded headphones, but when the AirPods Pro with noise cancellation came out, I believed the hoods only offered earbuds and another big box to carry around. My luggage is already full. After a couple of weeks of traveling, crossing 10,000 miles north with the Bose 700 headphones, it became clear that my over-ear stereotypes were nothing more than outright misconceptions, thanks there are loads of high-tech features on these headphones.

With a slightly steep price tag (retails for $379), here’s what you need to know about Bose 700 headphones.

What a traveler should look for in a good pair of headphones

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINT

Let’s face it: We all love surround sound (which increases audio fidelity so it sounds more natural) and noise cancellation features that help reduce outside noise. But no matter how beautiful those two features are, they’re not at the top of my wish list.

Wired and wireless connection

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINT

As someone who is constantly on the go, I always want to make sure that my headphones offer wired and wireless connectivity. That way, I can use wireless headphones to play audio on my phone or laptop, or use the cord to plug them into the in-flight entertainment system on the back of my seat. While this isn’t a hard prerequisite these days, as most over $100 headphones offer this, it’s non-negotiable for any of the headphones I’ve purchased. invest in.

The most notable is AppleAirPods only provides connectivity via Bluetooth. While some newer IFE systems offer Bluetooth audio, I have yet to see this feature on any of my flights. So if you’re just traveling with AirPods and want to watch movies on the screen in front of you on a plane, you’re likely stuck with those shabby in-flight earbuds that airlines don’t offer. offer them to you — if they absolutely offer them. .

Reliability

I also want to make sure that my headphones are durable. When I travel, my friends and family are often surprised at how much money I put in my backpack. Therefore, I am looking for a sturdy box to keep the headphones safe when I MacBook Pro 16 inch was hastily stuffed back into my backpack on my headphones after going through an airport security checkpoint.

painless call

Finally, I’m always looking for a microphone that definitely doesn’t pick up background sound. Let’s say your flight is canceled and there is a long queue to get rebooked. Like me shared in a recent articlethrough quickly go to the airline agent is the best way to get reset and continue your journey. When calling your airline, the last thing you want your agent to say is: “I’m sorry. I can not hear you. There is a lot of noise around. Please call back.” That’s why a clear microphone that doesn’t pick up conversations or background notifications is especially important for travelers.

Here are some features of Bose 700 headphones which I have come to like.

Noise cancellation

When I let my tech geek friend know that I was reviewing the Bose headphones 700, he told me that some of the newer Sony headphones (like Sony WH-1000XM5) has better noise cancellation. Although I haven’t tried the Sony headphones yet, the noise cancellation of the Bose 700 headphones impressed me.

You can change noise cancellation from 1 (minimum) to 10 (maximum) through the Bose Music app. There’s also a physical button on the side of the headset, which can change the noise control, but more on that later.

Walking down a busy street with cars traveling at about 30 mph all around me, I heard a quiet buzz as cars passed me with headphones on. degree 10. American Airlines During the flight, I played some Spanish guitar music mellow in the air. While I could still hear some planes, the headset blocked the toilet flush and the passengers next to me were talking. As we started descending, the first time I took off my headphones, I thought to myself, “Wow, this plane is so noisy,” after being surprised by how loud it can be without the headphones.

After unboxing the headphones, the instructions asked me to download the Bose Music app (available on iOS and Android). After downloading the app and allowing it to access Bluetooth, I was able to quickly connect the headset to my phone directly in the app. One of my favorite features about the headset is the ability to connect to both my phone and my laptop simultaneously. That way I don’t have to manually change the audio connection between the two devices.

You can also sign up for your own Bose Music login, but thankfully you don’t need a Bose Music account to use the headphones.

From the Bose Music app, you can adjust noise cancellation and equalizer, view tips, customize keyboard shortcuts, and access more features.

Intuitive controls

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINT

Controlling the headphones is simple with three physical buttons (power/Bluetooth, voice assistant, and noise control) and a touch-sensitive keyboard. The headphones come with a simple user guide to help you learn how to use the controls on the right earcup:

Request Feature
Two faucets. Play/pause music and answer or reject calls.
Swipe your finger up or down. Change the volume.
Swipe your finger left or right. Change songs.
Hold the Bose logo. Read battery.
Hold the Bose logo during an incoming call. Rejected calls.

While these controls aren’t difficult to learn, they don’t always work the first time. For example, two taps on the right earbud doesn’t always pause my music. I also have trouble with the noise control knob. Sometimes it’s hard to get the noise cancellation back up to 10, so I find myself using my phone and the Bose Music app to change many of these controls.

Beautiful design with two color options

KYLE OLSEN/THE POINT

In my opinion, the Bose 700 headphones is beautiful. They are some of the most stylish headphones on the market. You can choose to go with luxurious silver or black. When the headphones are folded back into the carrying case, each earcup rotates 90 degrees for easy insertion. At about 9 ounces, I never felt them too heavy, and the soft headband keeps you comfortable for hours.

Long-lasting battery

Bose claims that the battery will last up to 20 hours. In our mixed-use tests (phone calls, full noise cancellation, and moving the headphones from laptop to iPhone and vice versa), the battery lasted 12 hours and 35 minutes. Although it is 20 hours away, but after only 30 minutes of charging from the USB-C cord (included with the headset), the headset has 30% battery back.

bottom line

The Bose Headphones 700 are of superb quality and craftsmanship; however, the elephant in the room is a hefty price tag. Sony has a number of headphones for under $200 that offer great sound quality, better battery life, and high-quality noise cancellation. Still, the Bose headphones 700 offer unsurpassed comfort while ticking off all the items on my long headphone wish list. I would not hesitate to recommend them to friends.
