Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), which offers pricey stereotype-based ape irreplaceable tokens, announced on monday that its Instagram account had been hijacked and used to extract cryptocurrency.
“The attacker posted a phishing link to a clone of the Bored Ape Yacht Club website, where a safeTransferFrom attack asked users to connect their MetaMask to the scammer’s wallet to participate in a batch fake airdrop,” BAYC creator Yuga Labs said in a statement.
“Roughly estimated losses due to the scam are 4 Bored Apes, 6 Mutant Apes and 3 BAKC, as well as other NFTs estimated at a total value of ~$3 million. We are actively working to fix it. establish contact with affected users.”
On Twitter, it said that once the attack was discovered, the links to the Instagram account were removed before regaining control of the account. BAYC said it is looking into how the attack happened and will post Full autopsy.
It speakbefore contradicting its claims about reaching affected users.
“If you were affected by the attack or have useful information, contact [email protected]. You need to contact us first – whoever contacted you first is not us. We will NOT contact anyone by email first, and we will NEVER ask for your seed phrase.”
BAYC added that it will only announce minting events on Twitter and its announcement Discord channel.
In March, the company said it was looking to help Launch ApeCoinand then raised $450 million to build a metaverse project that will integrate avatars from several NFT projects.
Yuga Labs also recently acquired CryptoPunks and Meebits from Larva Labs.
