BMW Malaysia, EV Connection Launches First Mobile Charging Vehicle in Malaysia – up to 20 kWh, 15 kW DC

BMW Group Malaysia cooperates with electric vehicle charging solution provider Connecting electric vehicles to develop the first portable EV charging vehicle powered by repurposed BMW and MINI electric vehicle batteries, on display at the ongoing 2023 Malaysia Motor Show this week.

The portable charging vehicle is a prototype containing 16 units of repurposed BMW battery modules that are approximately 70% operational, provide a capacity of 20 kWh and can provide up to 30 phase three-phase AC power. kVA.

The Nissan Vanette shown in these images is currently the only prototype and actually only serves as a mobile platform for the charging base; According to an EV Connection representative, future versions may use a different make or model.

To charge the vehicle, the mobile charger has an original 30 kW DC charger that has been reduced in capacity to 15 kW – to prolong battery life – located at the rear of the vehicle and can therefore provide backup charging to supplies up to two EVs with enough battery to get to the nearest charging station.

In addition to rescuing electric vehicles that need to be recharged, the portable charging vehicle also provides enough electricity in disaster zones to power up to eight homes.

Mobile charging vehicles are included in the second-generation battery program, part of an initiative by BMW Group Malaysia, which aims to redirect all decommissioned EV batteries to expand electrification capabilities. their chemistry. BMW Malaysia says these will expand into high voltage solutions to provide urban charging centers, portable generators for disaster zones as well as electrification in rural areas in the future. future.

“Repurposing these end-of-life batteries from our electrified vehicles will essentially put them back in the loop to continue serving the EV ecosystem, once they have completed their cycle. life in our vehicles. This recognizes the important value of the precious metals contained in our batteries, which are a finite resource on this planet, and extends their useful life as much as possible before they expire. use,” said Sashi Ambi, head of corporate communications and sustainability for the BMW Group in Malaysia. .

“EV Connection is honored to be a part of this unprecedented innovation with a trusted automotive brand like BMW in the development of this portable charger. We hope that we will be able to raise concerns about the range of electric vehicle drivers and contribute to driving the electric mobility revolution in Malaysia,” said EV Connection technical director, Che. Hang Seng said.
