Big explosion at Berlin aquarium

A huge aquarium built in a hotel in Berlin explosiveInjured many people and caused “tsunami-like” devastation to the surrounding area.
The 82-foot-tall display—considered the world’s largest freestanding cylindrical storage tank—exploded early in the morning local time. Called “Aquadom,” the aquarium houses more than 1,500 fish and other inhabitants in about 250,000 gallons of water. Huge waves swept through the Radisson hotel lobby and onto the street.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but the low temperatures may have contributed to the explosion. While it was unfortunate that the multi-million dollar tank was destroyed, officials were grateful that human injuries were still limited.
“We are lucky because it happened at a time when only two people were slightly injured,” said Berlin Senate member Markus Kamrad told New York Times.
That’s not all bad news. Officials were surprised to find fish alive on the bottom of the tank and in the basement. Local veterinary clinics and aquariums are assisting with the capture of rescued species—some of which are “protected” and “rare.”
