Berlin airport reopens runway after climate protests

Berlin Brandenburg Airport said on Thursday flights were resuming with some delays after earlier forcing the closure of the runway when climate protesters stormed the site and some of them glued their eyes onto the runway.
Activists from the environmental group Last Generation urged the public to stop air travel and the government to stop subsidizing it.
Berlin police said on Twitter: “In an area of the airport that is not open to the public, we met a number of people who had previously had unauthorized access and some glued (to the runway).”
The latest protest by climate activists in Germany also calls on the government to expand low-cost train travel incentives.
“One percent of the affluent population is responsible for about half of flight-related greenhouse gas emissions,” Last Generation said in a statement, adding that a 70-year-old man in the number of activists at the airport.
An airport spokesman said activists entered the airport from two points north and south, and police arrested them.
A spokesman could not say how many flights were affected.
Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 shows that some of the planes originally headed for the airport have changed course.
About 13 flights were diverted to airports in the eastern state of Saxony before 6pm (1700 GMT), broadcaster rbb reported, citing Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, which operates the airports in Dresden and Leipzig. .
