Bentley Bentayga Speed 2022 makes for a surprisingly great rear rig

Since the Bentley Bentayga first debuted in early 2016, there have been dozens of reviews about it – including from us. So when Bentley is interested in providing me perfect key with the 2022 Bentayga Speed, I had to come up with something new and exciting to do with it. Then I realized my loan would completely coincide with Penn State’s Blue-White weekend (my alma mater). Let the game begin!

For those of you who don’t know what that is, this is basically our college spring game. However, the weekend isn’t really all about the game. It is really hanging out with a group of your friends in a field, playing games and vibing. It is about follow each other. That, my dear reader, is where Bentayga comes in.

So I put the $300,000 SUV to the test for adjustability.

(Full disclosure: Bentley lent me a Bentayga Speed complete with half a tank of gas to go out for a long weekend. ALSO: No drinking and driving occurred during the course of this article. Don’t drink and drive.)

That's a lot of shit.

That’s a lot of shit.

Spoiler alert: It’s pretty good at it. I mean, we’ve literally crammed this leather, alcantara, and wood cabin with all the essentials you might need to fit into a good rear door in the middle of a Pennsylvanian field. Some of the essentials included a table, chairs, a retractable gazebo, a fridge, food and drink plus bedding for the two nights we would have dropped on Linsey’s floor. You guys don’t know Linsey. However, she is great.

It should be said that our friend and her boyfriend also came with another car – a WK Grand Cherokee – so we could go doublewide and fit in even more crap (mostly another table and a portable grill).

To fit everything in the back of the Bentayga, we had to lower the left- and middle-rear seats. This was a cinch because of an easy-to-use metal lever at the base of the seat that pops them right down. After that, there was a little struggle getting the automated rear hatch to close without interference from stuff packed inside. As it turns out, the sloped roof does rob the luxury-mobile of some cargo room. Nevertheless, with a little ingenuity we were able to finally fit everything inside.

The Highway is Calling, and Bentayga is Here to Answer

My roommate, my girlfriend Kara, and I set off from my parents house in northern New Jersey. Route 80 was calling, and the Bentayga was ready to answer.

The highway is where the Bentayga shines like nothing else. The reasons for that are twofold. The first is its nuclear power plant of an engine. I was lucky enough to be sampling a Bentayga Speed, and “speed” is truly the operative word. Its twin-turbo 6-liter W12 battleaxe doesn’t accelerate. It advances forward like an airplane on the runway into takeoff. I’ve never felt anything like it, and neither had my passengers. I suppose that’s what 626 horsepower, 664 pound-feet of torque and 0-60 in under four seconds in a vehicle that weighs the better part of 5,600 pounds will do.

The calm before the stuff.

As also expected, I got some less-than-stellar gas mileage on my trip, averaging 16.3 miles per gallon. It’s guaranteed to put a real dent in your wallet, especially with today’s gas prices. However, if you’ve got $300,000 to spend on a car, the pains at the pump really doesn’t matter in the slightest.

The second reason the Bentayga shines on the highway is due to the fact that it’s so damn quiet. We were cruising at [NUMBER REDACTED] and can whisper to each other. All you hear is a vague road/wind somewhere deep in the background. This again evokes more flying comparisons.

My mind goes back to the old adage that you get what you pay for, and I suppose in this case, you will. This Bentayga Speed is priced at $298,675… that’s a lot of money. In fact, it almost makes Range Rover looks like a bargain in comparison. However, that number is not exactly fair. In theory, you could get a Bentayga starting at $16,000, but that car doesn’t exist. On the other hand, My Speed starts at $245,000. That means there was $41,150 in options and another $2,725 in Gas Guzzler fees charged.

What’s inside?

It all seems like a pretty big number, especially when you consider the fact that there’s some very, very Audi material inside… and the damn piano in black. I hate the black color of the piano. There are many beautiful wood grain for you to choose from for Bentayga. Why on God’s green Earth would you go with a black piano? After only five days, it was disgusting. Anyway, it’s not my favorite.

The front and rear seats are great. The front panel is nearly a billion baji, heated and cooled with extra massage (Oh my god, the massage function.) We all need this in our lives. .

The seats themselves are upholstered in beautiful dead cows with alcantara centers. Is it my first choice for a luxury cruise missile? Probably not, but the man does hold you just right. You feel important when you sit in them, and you are. After all, you own a Bentayga. Beautiful embroidery Speed also reminds you that you’ve got a big 100 for the big engine. It’s the little things like that that you really have to appreciate.

Something else that I appreciate? In fact, Bentley has taken the time to place a small alcantara pad near where your right knee rests while driving. This is becoming a crusade for me. All cars should have this little spacer, and I won’t stop complaining until they do.

Overall, the Bentayga has a lot of technology inside. I say that because it’s all floating in the background. It’s not in your face like a lot of modern cars. All just… works. The digital display is sharp and doesn’t smudge in the dark. It can be customized to your liking, but it never feels overwhelming. The head-up display also works well. the radar’s cruise was working fine, although you had to do the annoying thing of pressing the gas pedal a little to get it to work again. My car isn’t equipped with lane keeping or anything like that, and I don’t miss it.

My favorite little party trick is definitely the removable screen in the second row that lets you control everything, such as ambient colors and radio. It might be the best screwed-together handset I’ve ever used. It feels better than literally any cell phone I’ve ever held. It has the perfect weight. It can be used as a weapon if needed.

Overall, all technologies work well for the most part. Having said that, I had a problem with the 360 camera. One day – for no apparent reason – it just kept going back and forth. It won’t work. The next morning, when I went to the car, it rained again. Who really said what happened?

So tuning a Bentley

As you can imagine, we arrived in the field in a Bentley and we were collecting all the looks. I mean, how often do you see a Bentayga full of kids going to the backyard? The answer is never.

The fun hasn't even really begun yet.

We claim our place between the Ram 1500s and the Chevy Silverados. We are a very sore thumb. A few people came and asked for a closer look. I can’t blame them, neither can I.

Over time, the Bentayga proves it can not only function as a stationary rig, but really excel at it. Matching all our things is a bare minimum. It’s really everything about the Bentley itself that sets it apart. The first example of this is the rear suspension you can lower from the trunk. On the surface, it seems a bit gimmicky, but when you’re short and want to sit on the bumper while talking to your friends, it really comes in handy.

Another thing the Bentayga offers as a rear tuning rig that really helps is that it has a ton of riding modes for light riding. The path leading to the backdoor lots is some loose gravel and bumpy, and once you’re up on the slick lawn it’s not uncommon to see sleds and skids. However, not in Bentayga. Swipe the drive selector knob (located around the perfect start button) to gravel mode and it makes these light but slippery trails a piece of cake.

However, the biggest thing is the massage chairs. I’ve talked about it a few times before, but behind my back it’s just disgusting. So at one point, I got out of my rage and rested a bit in the front seat of the Bentayga, getting a deep tissue shoulder massage the whole time. It’s so resplendent. Again, you get what you pay for.

I can’t think of anything else I could want from this day on. My girlfriend and some of my best friends next to me and an expensive, luxury car to drive around and show off to people who can never see these things up close. It’s almost perfect.

Okay, there’s one thing I want: a real wood veneer on the inside. Did I mention I hate the black color of the piano?
