Bellew urges Golovkin to retire, forget the fight with Canelo
DAZN expert and former world cruiser champion Tony Bellew says Gennadiy Golovkin should retire from boxing.
GGG’s most recent win over Ryota Murata has been shown on the streaming service in the UK and US and fans have seen mid-tier fans unify the ratings once again. Just turning 40 has prevented the Japanese star from being ranked 9order round to its brand strength after facing a challenging start.
If Canelo Alvarez defeats Dmitry Bivol in light-heavyweight next month then the stage will appear for the Mexican to return to 168lbs to defend four world titles against Golovkin in a three-part match.
“He looks vulnerable, he looks aged, he’s being pushed back by a man who’s not known to be a heavyweight,” Bellew said on The DAZN Boxing Show.
“I wouldn’t go anywhere near Canelo if I were him. In my opinion, it will only end badly. Age doesn’t wait for a man, that was obvious. GGG, in my opinion, isn’t what it used to be, and I don’t want to see him get beaten up by Canelo in the third teamfight because I think that’s what’s going to happen. I think Canelo will go out there and stop him.”
Was clearly hurt by Murata’s body shots and had to back off more than we’re used to seeing Bellew worried about Golovkin.
“I think he is at a very dangerous part of his career. I think [Jermall] Charlo beat him. He has to go very carefully because he is on thin ice. There are several boxers, not just Canelo, who can break him. “
DAZN Boxing host Ade Oladipo then argued to Bellew that Golovkin should retire.
“In my opinion that is what he should do. He just walked away now when he was at the top. The guy’s worth tens of millions of pounds. Why not just say I had a great time, an illustrious, amazing amateur career representing Kazakhstan? A formidable warrior. It’s time to leave. ”
