Are you taking pictures of yourself?

We are completely inundated with images from every angle, every day, and as a result, it can be easy to fall into the trap of capturing the most popular trends. And it’s a shame when that happens, as it prevents you from developing your own creative voice and from being able to enjoy photography as much as you can. This great video essay is an important reminder that taking pictures of yourself is what matters most at the end of the day.

Coming to you from Steve O’Nions, this amazing video essay follows him on a hiking trip in North Wales, photographing both digital infrared and film. As O’Nions discusses, it can be easy to fall into the habit of following trends or falling prey to the opinions of others. Of course, if you’re a professional, you should pay attention to trends and understand what your customers might ask of you, but if you’re a hobbyist, you owe it to no one but yourself and it’s important to keep that in mind. After all, we pursue photography as a hobby because we love it, and it is important that we keep that in our hearts so as not to lose our love for the profession. Do what makes you happy and don’t worry about what other people think. Check out the video above for the full list from O’Nions.
