Bass Racing’s crossbreed Annapolis will attempt to claim their first win of the year on July 4 at the $100,000 Manila Stakes, a mile-long Widener turf test for sophomores at Belmont Park.
Coached by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, 3-year-old son of War front came in from a runner-up effort versus a soft walk in the Penn Mile Stakes (G2T) June 3 at Penn National behind the nasty Wow Whata Summer . The Penn Mile was the first start in eight months of layoffs for Annapolis, who ended her underage campaign in October with a crunch victory in Pilgrim Stakes (G2T) against Belmont pitch with 1/16 mile distance. Victory comes after a maiden first score run away with the same distance at Racecourse Saratoga that September.
“Physically, he finished very well. He looked super and was always a very professional horse to train,” Pletcher said. “It’s hard to judge the race at Penn. It’s bottomless ground and I think despite that, he tried really hard.”
Pletcher will also be represented by multiple stakes placed Chanceux third final launch at Paradise Creek Stakes as a seven-fireplace sprint at Belmont for owner Harrell Ventures.
DJ Stable and breeders Chester and Mary Broman will be hoping to see the New York hybrid Coins back to the victorious roads after a disappointing trip to Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day when the eighth at American Turf Stakes presented by BMW (G2T).
Hall of Fame coach Mark Casse said that Cochinchina was disturbed by the commotion of the crowd in attendance that day.
“I just threw that race out. It wasn’t any indication of his true ability. I don’t know what affected him. He was terrible in the lawn and in the gate and people could hear him kicking on TV,” Casse said.
The classifieds win bets have earned two ratings this year with a third in the Kitten Joy (G3T) Stake in February at Gulfstream Park and at the Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3T) in April at Keeneland.

An Ontario half-brother of American pharoah , Boston Tea Party made it easy when he dropped a special six-feathered maiden weight for his May 29 debut on the Belmont turf. It took him a while to get into the races but it was well worth the wait.
“In the face of this boy, I wouldn’t have thought in the first month we had him that he would turn into a good kind of horse,” Dutrow said. “He’s a very good guy to train and he’s very nervous and upset. He’s really working against himself. But he’s gotten a little better in all of those respects. . He’s good and that’s why we’re in this race. I don’t see any downside to trying.”
Donegal Racing’s Ready to Purrform was hit in the neck last time by Joe in James W. Murphy Stakes on May 21 at Racecourse Pimlico.
