Unfortunately, Roommates, another act of racism against Blacks, was taped. A Kansas City-area family claims they experienced racism at Lee’s Summit water park on Saturday. According to Fox 4, the Evans family, which includes their two teenagers, among others, said they paid $2,000 to host a large birthday party for their children at Summit Waves. During the visit, video showed an employee refusing to join a large group because she was “uncomfortable”.
As footage of the incident sparked outrage, an investigation is underway according to the WDAF. The Mayor of Lee’s Summit, Bill Baird, released a statement about the incident saying, “
Unfortunately, the statements of a Parks and Recreation manager at Summit Waves were inappropriate and insensitive. “
An additional statement from the city released Monday claimed the family advertised the party on social media. About 500 people attended the party, double the number that Summit Waives said they agreed to for the event. Mayor Baird has asked the city’s Parks and Recreation department to implement a process that could alleviate safety concerns for a large group present in the party while the investigation is underway.
Mayor Baird doesn’t stop there. He also asked the department to consider its approach to communicating and interacting with people using the city’s parks so that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
“We must knowingly embrace a culture of welcome and inclusion, and we must continually denounce any urge or push to exclude. I would like to expressly object to comments posted by a Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation employee on social media. “
He added, “The comments are appalling and unrecognized by Parks and Recreation, and don’t fit the culture I know City of Lee’s Summit is trying to reflect.”
