Amir Khan announced his retirement – Boxing Social

Former United World Champion Amir Khan has announced his retirement from boxing.

The 35-year-old announced today’s news on his social media. The decision was made just five days after Kell Brook hung up his gloves. Brook and Khan’s last fight of their careers was against each other earlier this year, which ended with Brook’s overall win.

Today, Khan said: “Time to hang up my gloves.

“I feel fortunate to have had a wonderful career spanning more than 27 years. I want to say thank you sincerely and to the incredible teams I have worked with as well as my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have given me. ”

Khan rose to prominence in boxing 18 years ago when he won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

‘King Khan’ was then born as he entered the professional ranks starting with his debut against David Bailey on July 16, 2005. Since then, Bolton has been a success in the UK and US. The Commonwealth title would be against Willie Limond in 2007 but a year later he suffered a crushing career defeat to Breidis Prescott in just one round.

Renowned for his heart and grit, Khan made a comeback in 2009 winning his first world title at 140lbs against Andriy Kotelnik. Beating Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana will follow, as will a super-light unified victory over Zab Judah. And while defeats to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia derailed his expectations for greater heights, his popularity rarely passed. His all-around action style combined with explosive hand speed and frailty makes him a must-see on television.

Khan proved his openness by moving up to 160lbs to challenge Canelo Alvarez and after a solid start he was knocked down in the sixth round.

A memorable career has finally come to an end and everyone at Boxing Social wishes him a happy retirement.
