Problem in allowed scheduler American Airlines Its union said Saturday it had cut thousands of trips in July, a headache for the airline as it tries to minimize flight disruption in one boom tourist season.
The union said pilots dropped more than 2,000 trips in July, and each trip typically has at least two flights, so it could affect at least twice that amount.
On Saturday alone, American had more than 3,000 mainline flights scheduled, and they were 93 percent full, according to an internal tally. However, non-delayed flights are an additional stress for any airline.
A summer break is unlikely for airline workers as schedules peak to meet strong demand.
American said it was aware of the issue and had suspended a platform that allowed pilots to change their schedules.
“We understand these are important tools for our pilots and are working as quickly as possible. We’ll provide updates during the day as we learn more,” American said. with the pilots in an email on Saturday.
The carrier did not say immediately if the trip could be canceled.
Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, the pilots’ union, said: “They have failed to keep their IT systems up and running and thousands of flights have had no pilots assigned to them. He said the issue created “uncertainty for passengers and pilots.”
One same problem happened in 2017, when a technology problem allowed American pilots to take a vacation during the busy December holiday. The airline offered pilots 150% pay for the mission.
