Adorable new puppy helps mend hearts broken by tragedy

When Miguel and Ada Rojas stepped out into the warm outdoors of a South Florida morning, they had no idea what would happen to them.

Both nearly 90 years old, the West Miami couple are expected to take a slow, relaxing walk with their 3-year-old Chihuahua dog, Gucci. Beneath the rustling palm trees that shaded their path, cooled by a fresh breeze off the Atlantic, they had no reason to suspect that danger lurked nearby.

But it prowled, in the form of two stray dogs. There is no way out for the Rojas family once the two notice them. The woman’s sprint turned into a full-blown sprint as she crouched over the tiny Gucci, who was quickly overwhelmed. Ada struggled to separate two dogs, one large and aggressive, the other small and defenseless, suffering her own wounds during the attack. But it’s too late. Gucci is dead.

When it’s all over, Ada will require 100 stitches. Miguel will be hospitalized for a heart attack due to stress.

It was a devastating tragedy that no dog owner had to endure.

But the veil of sadness over Miguel and Ada was pulled back when Mario Cambo, a man who had seen their story on the news, felt moved to help them.

“I saw the story yesterday and immediately I said I needed to do something and I did something because this broke my heart,” Mario said.

He bought a Chihuahua puppy from Lynn Broderick at the We Puppy Paws Kennel in Homestead, Florida, who did his part in alleviating Miguel and Ada’s suffering by selling the puppy for half price. .

“It just broke my heart,” Lynn said, “and I wanted to do something.”

With the help of Rojas’ daughter, also named Ada, Mario was able to surprise the grieving family with their newest member and bring a bittersweet smile to the face that still lingers. tears of loss.

Sobs covered Miguel’s body as he held the large-eyed, soft-eared capsule to his chest. “I am very happy,” he said in Spanish. “And sad.”

Ada repeated her feelings. “We feel the death of Gucci very deeply. And this dog will keep us alive.”

Seeing them together, the puppy relaxing comfortably in his parents’ arms, Ada summed up the situation perfectly.
