“A piece fit for a museum”: Vanessa Kirby honors Lagerfeld’s legacy in iconic Chloé bathing suit at the 2023 Met Gala
“You know what, I’ve never been with such a wonderful group of women,” Vanessa Kirby told me over the phone the morning after the 2023 Met Gala, where she and the rest of the Whos fashion world paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld through the love language of the garment peacock. With wilderness And Maude Apatow, Kirby attended the event with the designer Gabriela Hearst, which Crown said the actor made the evening quite cozy.
“Those events can be quite challenging,” explains Kirby. “We were a complete team—we had a drink in Gabriela’s room before we left, then we all got in the car together, and we really didn’t leave each other all night.”

Another advantage of joining Hearst’s House on the biggest fashion night: access to classic Chloé, including the iconic “shower dress”, once arguably Lagerfeld’s most prominent creation; the one Kirby wore to the gala was an original one from the house’s fall 1983-84 collection.
“It was unbelievable, they had it as one of their archives actually in the museum as we walked around,” she said. “It was wonderful to wear something that was museum-appropriate—it was really special, and I suppose that’s really what happened that evening.” To complement the meticulously hand-embroidered shower head motif on the back, Kirby and her team completed the look with a simple (although Christian Louboutin) silver sandals and Cartier bracelets: “We just wanted to keep it clean and simple, not fancy.”
Overall, Kirby said, she found the evening dedicated to the late fashion giant extremely emotional. “You’ve seen the standard throughout his entire work, and you’ve been thinking about him a lot,” added the actor, who is about to begin promoting the upcoming (Saturday!) Mission Impossible. “I know that people say it just feels so soulful.”
