A near-collision between two planes in Austin prompts FAA investigation: NPR

The Federal Aviation Administration said a FedEx cargo plane was forced to change course while attempting to land after a Southwest Airlines plane was authorized to depart from the same runway at an airport. flying in Austin, Texas.

According to preliminary information, the FAA said the FedEx plane was authorized to land a few miles from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Saturday morning. Just before the FedEx plane was about to land, an air traffic controller authorized the Southwest flight to depart.

“The pilot of the FedEx plane stopped landing and began climbing out,” the FAA said in a statement. “Southwest flight departs safely.”

FAA and National Traffic Safety Board Both are investigating the near-collision.
