Cupra Leon 2025: What’s coming to Australia?

The Cupra Leon The hatchback range will get a new, more efficient engine at the top end of the range and a 245kW flagship wagon model when it arrives in Australia in 2025.

Upgraded version runs on gasoline Leon will launch in Australia in the second quarter of 2025, with plug-in hybrid versions due mid-year alongside the Leon Sportstourer wagon.

The updated Leon will get a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, shared with the mentorwith 110kW power and 250Nm of torque, combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 48V mild-hybrid system designed to deliver smoother start/stop performance.

Sitting above it in the range will be a 150kW petrol engine and a 200kW plug-in hybrid good for 100km of electric range.

As is the case with the Formentor, the VZ – shares the same 180kW engine with Volkswagen Golf GTI – is likely to malfunction by 2025.

Topping the hatchback range will be the front-wheel drive VZx with 221kW, as is currently the case.

As for Sportstourer? When it launches in mid-2025, it will be billed as a more “upmarket” offering than the hatchback due to limited local demand for wagons.

Expect to see the range-topping VZx with 245kW and all-wheel drive as well as a 200kW plug-in hybrid version.

Cupra has introduced a number of performance-oriented options with this Leon update, led by a set of more racing-like bucket seats.

They have the opportunity to come to Australia because they appear on Born VZ preparing to land later this year.

There are also optional Akebono performance brakes revealed as part of the update.

In addition to the overhauled engine, the Leon line also gets a new look and fresh interior.

There’s a new 12.9-inch touchscreen on the dashboard, complete with backlit touch sliders and an interface designed to make key functions easier to access.
