FREEDOM, Maine – A backcountry commuter is doing repairs in Maine after traveling the country in a moving truck.
The larger roadrunner, a species native to the Southwest states, took the vehicle in the storage area of a truck traveling from Las Vegas to Westbrook, Maine. Volunteers took the bird to Avian Haven, a bird rehabilitation facility in Maine.
Avian Haven reps say they received a call about the bird on November 13 and it continued to rest on Tuesday. They said in a Facebook post that the bird was in “remarkable condition” having been trapped in a truck for four days but may have lost weight during the journey.
Diane Winn, chief executive officer of Avian Haven, said the center is looking for a way to return the roadrunner to Nevada once it is healthy enough.
The center has created an exceptional habitat for the bird, the group says, which is warmer than its usual outdoor areas, while also providing enough room.
