For example, one of the most classic types of outdoor portraiture is a subject or a couple with the setting sun behind them. The point is that to avoid losing the sky, you need to dial in the exposure settings that will leave your subject(s) in the dark. To remedy this, portrait photographers add flash to bring their subject(s) back to the proper level.
