Hearn: Charlo did nothing to secure the fight with Canelo

Promoter Eddie Hearn says WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo has done nothing to warrant a showdown with Mexican star Canelo Alvarez.

Tom Brown of TGB Promotions, who represents Jermall Charlo and Errol Spence, recently revealed to BoxingScene that PBC had offered Canelo $45 million in security to fight Charlo, with a $55 million guarantee to fight Charlo. Spence at 164 lbs if he wins.

Instead, Canelo signed WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on DAZN, whose bout will take place in Las Vegas this weekend.

“Who did Charlo fight with?” Hearn told Andi Purewal of Boxing Social. “There are no notable victories. I think he’s a good fighter, but when is Charlo going to fight? He didn’t do anything to warrant a fight with Canelo Alvarez.

“That fight will be Canelo’s voluntary defense of the 168lbs title. What trophies can Canelo take from Charlo? I repeat – the guy who once defeated Charlo to secure a fight with Canelo Alvarez.

“Errol Spence at 164… Canelo will never fight under 168 again. He likes to go in there and take away people’s titles. Look at his run. This is what Canelo does. He loves to make history.

“Worried about going up against Charlo in middleweight who has never beaten anyone? These guys are delighted, because they signed a one-time fight deal, beat their champion and back. “
