GE Appliances recalls refrigerators with detachable freezer handles: NPR
GE Appliances is Voluntary withdrawal About 155,000 refrigerators sold in the US have freezer handles that can pop open when the user tries to open them, posing a risk of falling.
An additional 2,300 were sold in Canada.
GE Appliances, owned by the Chinese company Haier, recall notice in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The company says some stainless steel, French-style refrigerators may have an improperly installed freezer handle that can loosen when pulled. If the handle is released, the user may lose balance and fall.
GE Appliances has received 71 reports of the freezer handle dislodging. Among them, 37 injuries were reported, including three serious fall injuries.
“As part of our commitment to product safety and consumer loyalty, we are voluntarily recalling affected units to provide a free home repair service.” , the company said in a statement on its website.
Likely affected models were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, and other home appliance stores as well as online at Lowes.com and BestBuy.com from February 2020 through January this year.
Consumers can visit the GE Appliances website to check if their refrigerator is covered by the recall. If that’s the case, consumers can schedule a free home repair.
