Launched a GoFundMe for injured gym-goer Rollins


When working with horses, it’s not a matter of whether or not you’ll get injured; When was that and how bad was it?

Molly Rollins, stablemaster for John Ortiz Racing Stables and assistant news editor for BloodHorse, was injured in a training accident April 26 at Keeneland. The accident happened when the 2-year-old she was riding suddenly flipped over as they were about to exit the track. According to one GoFundMe page set up on her behalf, Rollins suffered a broken pelvis and internal bleeding.

Rollins said Monday that she has had two surgeries and will be doing physical therapy for the foreseeable future.

“I love my racing family and this sport,” said Rollins. “It means so much to me and my family to receive everyone’s kindness and support during these challenging times.”

The 2-year-old boy was not injured and was trained the next day.

Rollins began racing horses in 2012 at the age of 21. She has worked as an assistant trainer for Luis Carvajal, and as an exerciser for Mark Casse Racing Stables and Herringswell Stables. Rollins has been stable manager with John Ortiz Racing Stables since November 2021.

While studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Journalism at Rutgers University in Camden, NJ, Rollins interned at Thoroughbred Daily News. After graduating in 2020, she was hired as BloodHorse’s assistant news editor. Rollins covers events such as the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup races, contributes feature stories to BloodHorse magazine and writes the weekly Maiden Watch column on BH Daily.

The GoFundMe The page was founded by Sandra Washington, John Ortiz’s assistant, to assist with Rollins’ medical expenses.
