A Kentucky teacher who was filmed fighting with a 16-year-old student has been fired, MTO News reports.
William Bennett, a science teacher at Marion C. Moore School in Louisville, was fired following an investigation by Jefferson County Public Schools, which found he had “escalated the situation” and made “remarks” considered inappropriate” to a 16-year-old boy.
Before the termination of his contract, Mr. Bennett had been assigned “no instruction” by the county since video of the incident went viral in August.
The investigation found that the conflict began when Jamir Strane, 16, punched Bennett in the back of the head. In a subsequent struggle, Bennett pinned Jamir to the ground and placed “all of his body weight on top of him”.
As onlookers shouted for the teacher to kick the student out, Jamir continued to try and punch Mr. Bennett. When, the student finally frees himself from the teacher’s grip, the teacher begins pulling the student’s hair, footage of the performances interspersed.
Strane told the WDRB: “He said, ‘You’re going to be another black man who gets shot to death’. “I will write it in English. He said, “You’ll die in the street,” in my mind, like all my friends. “
The teen was suspended for 10 days and faces assault charges over the incident.
It was a far cry from the first time Mr. Bennett engaged the students. In 1999, while teaching near Hardin County Schools, the teacher also arrested a student for misconduct.
