DOE Creates New Clean Energy Demonstration Office Under Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

DECEMBER 21, 2021

DOE will oversee $20 billion federal investment to build clean energy projects across US to achieve President Biden’s net goals

WASHINGTON DC – The United States Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the establishment of Clean Energy Certification Office, a new DOE office will help deliver on President Biden’s bold climate agenda, create new jobs, pay well for American families and workers, and reduce pollution while bringing benefits to disadvantaged communities.

President Biden’s bipartisan Infrastructure Act provides more than $20 billion to establish the Office of Clean Energy Demonstration and supports clean energy technology demonstration projects in areas including clean hydrogen, carbon capture, grid-scale energy storage, small modular reactors, etc. Demonstration projects demonstrate the effectiveness of innovative technologies under real-world conditions at large scale to pave the way for widespread adoption and deployment. The establishment of this office represents a new chapter building on DOE’s long standing as a leading international engine for clean energy research and development, expanding DOE’s reach to fill a critical innovation gap on the path to net zero emissions by 2050.

“Thanks to the investments made by Congress in the bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the Clean Energy Demonstration Office will move clean energy technologies out of the lab and into local and regional economies. across the country, demonstrating the value that technologies can bring to communities, businesses and markets,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm. “This new office will hire the best and brightest talent to invest in cutting-edge clean energy projects, and DOE is calling on anyone dedicated to tackling the climate crisis to roll up their sleeves and Join us.”

“This new Clean Energy Demonstration Office reflects President Biden’s commitment to helping Americans turn on the lights in their homes, commute, and power their businesses using clean, affordable energy. affordable and sustainable. This office will make life easier and safer for Americans across the country,” said Mitch Landrieu, Senior White House Advisor and Infrastructure Deployment Coordinator.

This investment in the Clean Energy Demonstration Office is part of the $62 billion bill in the bipartisan Infrastructure Act that will advance the DOE’s work on clean energy demonstrations to deliver clean technologies. cutting edge for communities and businesses across the country. These demonstrations will fund projects of hundreds of millions or billions of dollars and will usher in the next big investment from the private sector to deploy these technologies, providing clean energy. and create well-paying jobs in communities around the country.

The office’s programs also include billions of dollars to invest in demonstration projects in rural areas and economically disadvantaged communities – a key focus of the Justice40 initiative of the General President Biden aims to deliver 40% of clean energy investment returns to disadvantaged communities and those experiencing the first and worst impacts of climate change. The Office will continually engage environmental, labor and community justice groups to help shape program development and implementation. In addition to the large-scale projects, DOE will continue to support many of the smaller-scale pilots and demonstrations needed to meet the Administration’s climate goals.

On the plus side, at least someone in the Biden administration has acknowledged the existence of a “critical Innovation gap” in renewable energy that needs to be filled. So it seems regrettable that the Biden administration failed to reach this logical conclusion and suspended the deployment of renewable installations based on current technology, which cannot provide value for money.
