Find multi-layered classes: Most technical waterproof jackets are referred to as two- or three-layer jackets. These layers typically consist of a fabric that has been treated with a repellent such as a durable water repellent, which is a thin mesh to release water vapor, plus a protective inner lining underneath. In general, for extra durability, you’ll want to look for layers that have been laminated together rather than just coated with a waterproofing agent. That’s the advice of Amber Williams, consumer science educator and lecturer from Wyoming State University.
Waterproof and breathable ratings: Manufacturers often rate each fabric based on its water resistance and breathability. For example, a raincoat with a waterproof rating of 20,000 means that if you have a 1-inch square tube that is endlessly long, you can pour 20,000 mm of water over the fabric before it starts to seep through. (ie over 65 feet!). The 20,000 breathability rating means that 20,000 grams of water vapor can pass through the fabric in the other direction. While a higher breathability rating may seem better, you may want to think again if you’ll be outside in the cold. Body heat can escape from a breathable jacket almost as easily as water vapor.
Great fabrics: Gore-Tex remains the gold standard for waterproof performance. But every company is experimenting with new weaving techniques, especially PFC-free waterproofing technology. The future of The North Face is a waterproof yet breathable spider-weight fabric that allows designers to create garments with fewer seams. Check seams and zippers: If you want your rain jacket to last longer than an amusement park poncho, look at the seams. Shoulders are particularly vulnerable, as most outdoor sports require you to wear a backpack that can rub and damage them. “The lines look really sexy, but over time they don’t last long,” says Williams. Other features to look for include plastic, water-resistant zippers and protective zipper covers. Take care of your coat: You can extend the life of your items by taking proper care of them. Hang your coat — don’t store it in a small, abrasive sack. If you see a stain from grease, dirt or sunscreen, or notice that water is no longer standing on the surface, you need to wash it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You may need a specialized cleaner — many fabric cleaners will leave residue that can interfere with DWR operation. Avoid using fabric softener, bleach, dry cleaner or dryer.
